Vibrant, inspiring and beautiful….Mexico is a place that really resonates with who we are as people and our personalities. We love colour in our clothing, our style and our brand, and you see colour everywhere - all the quaint cities have painted walls that are great inspiration for pantones that we can bring into our collections. The people have such a lovely warmth and it’s so vast that each place has a unique energy; it has incredible nature, the mountains and the beaches, each of which has its own little vibe whether it’s surfy or glam. And we can’t forget the amazing food….
We first visited a few years ago when we went there to shoot our Confessions of a Wallflower collection, and we knew then that we wanted to go back as soon as we could. So, earlier this year, we packed our bags for what was meant to be a three week road trip… which evolved into an incredible two month stay.
These are the places that inspired us and the hotels, restaurants and experiences that we loved the most,
We started our trip in Baja, Mexico, travelling through the small surf town of Todos Santos and La Paz and visiting Ballandra Beach. We stayed at Todos Santos Inn and the new Paradero Hotel. We shot some of the new collection at Paradero, a kind of desert oasis - the muted tones and connection to nature really resonated with our inspirations and influences for ‘A Quiet Storm’…
Cute little colourful houses with a backdrop of palms and wild landscape, incredible sunsets - turning the sky into balls of orange and pink, whale watching, bonfires on the beach, tantalising tacos.
Favourite restaurant: The best Italian in Todos Santos, Ristorante Tre Galline. The Brasato Beef Ravioli is a must try.
Shop: Mixtica for vintage finds.
Eating: Tacos at the roadside stalls - Barajas Tacos
We travelled on to San Miguel de Allende, a magical otherworldly place with cobbled streets best explored on foot, taking you to a land before time…. We stayed both in the centre of town at L’Otel Doce, then at the magical Casa Eterea for a few days, a beautiful and unique mirrored glass house (make sure to snap the ultimate mirror selfie), sustainable and set in nature, where we shot some of the pieces for SS21 whilst exploring the mountainous area on horseback at sunrise.
We moved onto Oaxaca, staying at the recently opened PugSeal Hotel with its large hand-painted murals across the walls by artist Rafael Uriegas. The city has a great energy, it’s full of colour and is a food lover's paradise. Stroll through the city’s wonderful markets and get lost amongst the colonial streets.
Eating: Los Danzantes is a creative and flavourful Mexican restaurant - great Mezcal cocktails and incredible gourmet food. For a special occasion and outdoor dining experience eat in the courtyard at the wonderful Criollo.
Visit: Mercado 20 de Noviembre, the infamous meat market.
We finished our trip in Mexico City, staying in tiny boutique hotels and exploring the city on foot. It’s such a fun, beautiful, energetic, artistic, interesting city - a vibrant mix where you can go to a metropolitan cocktail bar and then get tacos on the street for $2. Walking through Roma is like exploring a concrete jungle, it’s so green, with winding streets to get lost in, quaint cafés and little shops and boutiques filled with artisanal one-offs. Strolling along the Amsterdam Road which takes you through Roma, Palanquo and Condeesa. Exploring the gold jewellery quarter, a treasure chest for magpies like us.
Visit: Frida Kahlo’s home and studio, La Casa Azul
Stay: At La Valise in Roma - the room at the top of the house has a bed that you can wheel out for sleeping under the stars or having breakfast in bed outside.
Eat: Maximo Bistro in Roma or for a Mexican fine dining experience Pujol is your go to.
